VOLUNTEERS: a) CRISIS LINE
Volunteers are vital to the Saskatoon Sexual Assault & Information Centre 24-Hour Crisis Line. Volunteer Training is offered three times each year, and includes information on a variety of topics including: sexual harassment, recent sexual assault, child sexual abuse, adult survivors of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, self-abuse, suicide, the Legal and Medical processes, communication skills and self care.
- Volunteers are provided with over 30 hours of training in order to better equip them for the variety of calls they will experience on the Crisis Line.
- Volunteers are asked to commit themselves for one year of service, taking at least 4 Crisis Line shifts per month.
- Volunteers find their experience to be challenging and rewarding.
- SSAIC is always seeking individuals -female or male- who have good listening skills, are compassionate and sensitive to client issues, and who can provide support in a non-judgmental manner. See "Calendar" for next training dates.
VOLUNTEERS: B) Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program: "I'm the Boss of Me" Puppetry Program.
- APPLICATIONS FOR PUPPETRY VOLUNTEERS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED FOR THIS TERM. PLEASE CONTACT US IN THE FALL OF 2012 IF YOU WISH TO VOLUNTEER WITH THE 2012/13 SEASON The program offers teachers in Grade 4 classrooms a series of Lesson Plans to help them educate children on abuse issues. Puppeteers are typically students from the University of Sask. Colleges of Education and Nursing, and the University of Regina Faculty of Social Work - as well as other interested participants. "I'm the Boss of Me" is a gentle story of 4 friends, 2 of which have experience sexual abuse. Together, a child discovers that sexual abuse is not her fault, that it should never be kept a secret, that there are people who will believe her and provide support.
- Volunteer Puppeteers are required to participate in this exciting project between January and April of 2012. Ideally, they will be students of Education, Nursing, Social Work or other Human service programs.
- Volunteers can participate in as few or as many shows as meets their needs.
- Volunteers will receive solid information on child sexual abuse, understanding their role in the classroom, responding to disclosure, in puppetry skills, and opportunity work on an interdisciplinary team.
- All volunteers in this program must present a current Police Record Check (CPIC).
